The other day I was watching the morning news and saw the number one reason behind people not going to the gym was because they felt intimidated. I totally understood this. Before becoming very confident in myself and my abilities at the gym, I was one of those people who felt like I was being judged and stared at while working out. The truth is, no one is focusing on you when you’re at the gym. Everyone goes to the gym to focus on their own fitness. Although it may feel as if the whole world is looking at you, I’m here to tell you that they aren’t! So, I thought it would be helpful if I gave you some tips to overcoming gymtimidation in order for you to stop dreading the gym and feeling more confident while you work out.

  • Workout with a friend – This can help relieve the anxiety of getting in the gym if you have someone with you to help distract those negative thoughts.
  • Go to the gym during off hours – Having fewer people in the gym will make you feel less judged.
  • Have a plan – Write down your workout in advance so that you can feel more structured and look less confused.
  • Listen to music – Drowning out the background noise can help you focus solely on yourself.

Overall, it’s important to not compare yourself to other people while at the gym. Often times people think they aren’t fit enough to go to the gym but in order to reach the level of fitness you want you have to go to the gym. We all have to start somewhere so focus on yourself instead of wondering what everyone else is thinking.
